Express yourself freely!

ActiveWatch promotes, on a daily basis, article 30 of the Romanian Constitution:

„(1) The freedom to express thoughts, opinions or beliefs and the freedom of creations of any kind, either vocally, in writing, or by means of images, sounds or any other means of communication in public, are inviolable”.

Freedom of speech in Romania

In 1859, John Stuart Mill was writing:

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it.  If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth. If wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error” (On Liberty).

Freedom of speech is the basis of the freedom of (your) personal expression, because it is an instrument of the freedom of conscience, of personal identity and of personal development. Freedom of expression contributes to the development of knowledge and allows for the communication of political ideas, which are essential in any country aspiring for democracy. By learning to respect the others' freedom of expression, we improve our capacity to be tolerant. Personal autonomy, truth and democracy are the essential values that we promote when we respect the individual's right to freedom of expression.

For such considerations, we constantly respect and promote the right to freedom of expression.
